L’exposé porte sur les grandes questions d’influence en rapport avec la fiction d’Iris Murdoch et est organisé en trois parties. Dans la première, j’explore l’idée qu’Iris Murdoch était protéiforme, à la fois dans son moi intérieur et dans ses premiers romans. La partie centrale esquisse l’influence de trois précurseurs très différents : Raymond Queneau, Walter Scott et Elias Canetti. Enfin, je passe à la question de l’importance de Murdoch pour les autres romanciers. This essay is a speculative piece written by someone who is both a literary critic or historian and also his subject’s biographer and so it does not always follow a conventional academic paradigm. The talk concerns broad questions of influence in relation to Iris Murdoch’s fiction, and is organized in three parts. In the first I explore the idea that Iris Murdoch was protean, both in her inward self, as also in her early novels. The middle section sketches the influence of three very different precursors: Raymond Queneau, Walter Scott, and Elias Canetti. Finally I move to the question of Murdoch’s importance for other novelists. In the space available, much can be finger-painted only of questions that—hopefully—others may wish to explore further and in greater depth.
