(Re)devenir Hui : l’ethnicisation d’une municipalité autonome à Baiqi (Fujian)

Cet article traite de la fluidité de la catégorisation ethnique aux abords de la ville-préfecture de Quanzhou (province du Fujian), où le lignage Han des Guo a été récemment reconnu comme Hui. Cette transformation catégorielle a impliqué la création d’une municipalité autonome Hui en 1990 et une nouvelle visibilité de la « musulmanité » de ce groupe. Si le rôle politique de catégorisation ethnique se doit d’être souligné, l’identité Hui ne peut être réduite à une invention de l’État. En observant les pratiques cultuelles de ce lignage et les interactions interethniques avec les Hui du nord-ouest, il est possible d’appréhender la plasticité catégorielle de ce groupe ethnique, faite de réappropriation et de controverses.

This article discusses the fluidity of ethnic categorization on the outskirts of the prefecture-level city of Quanzhou (Fujian province), where the Guo Han lineage has recently been recognized as Hui. This categorial transformation has involved the creation of an autonomous Hui municipality in 1990 and a new visibility of the “Muslimness” of this group. If the political role of ethnic categorization must be underlined, the Hui identity cannot be reduced to an invention of the State. By observing the worship practices of this lineage and the interethnic interactions with the Hui from the northwest, it is possible to understand the categorical plasticity of this ethnic group, made up of reappropriation and controversies.
