Les Goncourt ne peuvent concevoir l’histoire que petite, ce qui tient à la fois à leur refus du grand genre de l’histoire, qui regarde vers l’épopée, et à leur prédilection pour l’intime, la physiologie, le détail signifiant. L’autographe, l’estampe, la pièce inédite, sont leur matériau d’historiens, qu’ils collectionnent et raboutent, sans souci de raconter l’histoire, ce qui apparente leur œuvre, historique, théâtrale et romanesque, à une collection de documents qui ne font pas toujours ensemble.

The only history the Goncourt brothers could conceive of is written with a small ‘h’. This is due both to their rejection of the grand genre of History, which tends towards the epic, and their predilection for the intimate, physiology, and the significant detail. Signatures, prints, engravings, and previously unknown works: such are the materials they work with as historians, collecting and piecing them together without trying to narrate history. Their oeuvre, comprising history, theatre and novels, therefore resembles a series of documents that do not always form a coherent whole.
