There can hardly be a better place to study the issue of mahr (marriage payment) than Aden, the city that itself once acted as a dower. In the year 1068, Sayyida Arwa, a young woman raised in the royal house married her cousin al-Mukarram, the son of cAlî al-Sulayhî who was the Fatimid ruler of the Yemen. The bride was only 16 at the time of the wedding, but well-read and a skilful writer. The ruler bestowed on her as her mahr and her personal income and property the revenues of the prosperou...
