The Mosque and Women’s Resistance: Rethinking the Summer of 2013 in Cairo

In 2013, when the criticism of the newly elected political leaders that hailed from the Muslim Brotherhood reached a nationwide crescendo, Egyptian women also took to the streets in masses. Yet, despite the widespread support for the coup that deposed the democratically elected president, Mohammed Morsi, not all Egyptian women agreed with this political turn. Although much has been written about women’s activism in Egypt during the country’s recent transitional period (2011-2013), the activism of those who supported the Islamists has received less attention. This article discusses the little-researched perspective of Egyptian women who resisted the overthrow of President Morsi in the summer of 2013. The article delves into the reasoning of a group of women who supported the ousted president amidst violence, death, and the imprisonment of his loyalists. It does so by drawing on the author’s ethnographic research in a mosque in one of Cairo’s impoverished neighborhoods. The Qur’an lessons that are analyzed in this article did not only provide guidance on the study of religious texts, but they also offered a safe space in which the women could interpret the unfolding political developments.

Lorsque les critiques envers le régime des Frères musulmans ont atteint une envergure nationale en 2013, les femmes égyptiennes sont également descendues dans la rue en masse. Pourtant, malgré le soutien important au coup d'État qui a renversé le président démocratiquement élu, Mohammed Morsi, toutes les Égyptiennes n'ont pas approuvé ce tournant politique. Bien que l’on ait abondamment écrit au sujet de l'activisme des femmes égyptiennes pendant la récente période de transition du pays (2011-2013), l'activisme de celles qui soutenaient les islamistes a reçu une attention moindre. Cet article aborde le point de vue peu documenté des femmes égyptiennes qui ont résisté au renversement du président Morsi pendant l'été 2013. L'article se penche sur les réflexions d'un groupe de femmes qui ont soutenu le président destitué, alors que ses partisans risquaient des attaques violentes, l'emprisonnement ou la mort. Cette étude s'appuie ainsi sur une recherche ethnographique menée au sein d’une mosquée d'un des quartiers populaires du Caire. Les leçons de Coran analysés dans cet article fournissent plus qu’un guide pour étudier les textes religieux. Ces séances ont également offert un espace sûr au sein duquel les femmes pouvaient discuter des développements politiques en cours.

في الوقت الذي تصاعدت الإنتقادات الموجهة لنظام الإخوان المسلمين لتصل إلى المستوي الوطني في ٢٠١٣، نزلت المَرأة  المصرية كذلك بأعداد كبيرة الى الشارع، وبالرغم الدعم الكبير للإنقلاب الذي اطاح بالرئيس محمد مرسي المنتخب ديمقراطياً، لم تؤيد كل المصريات هذا المنحنى السياسي، ورغم كثافة ماكُتب عن نشاط السيدات المصريات خلال الفترة الإنتقالية الأخيرة في البلاد (٢٠١١-٢٠١٣)، لقى العمل النشط لمن دعمن الإسلام السياسي إهتماماً اقل، هذا المقال البحثي يتناول وجهة نظر السيدات المصريات اللاتي قاومن عزل الرئيس محمد مرسي في صيف ٢٠١٣ والتي لم توثق بشكل كبير، والمقال يبحث أفكار مجموعة سيدات دعمن الرئيس المعزول في الوقت الذي كان داعميه عُرضة للهجوم العنيف أو السجن أو الموت، وتستند الدراسة الى بحث إثنوغرافي أُجرى داخل أحد المساجد في حي من الأحياء الشعبية بالقاهرة، ودروس القرآن التي تم تحليلها في هذا المقال تمثل اكثر من دليل لدراسة النصوص الدينية، فهذه الجلسات كانت كذلك فضاء آمن يمكن للسيدات ان يناقشن فيه التطورات السياسية الجارية.
