Penser les frontières au Moyen-Orient et au Sahel : enjeux et concepts

Cet article entend revenir sur le rapport conceptuel entre l’objet frontière et la région du Moyen-Orient et du Sahel. Il se propose de détailler le champ des études spécialisé sur ces questions, les border studies. Il s’agira de comprendre en quoi les apports conceptuels de ce domaine d’études permettent de systématiser l’étude des frontières dans cette région et on évaluera les enjeux et les limites de ces conceptualisations dans l’aire concernée. Pour cela, nous examinerons dans un premier temps les enjeux d’une conceptualisation interdisciplinaire articulant espace, pouvoir et identité/altérité. Dans un second temps, les concepts et approches seront détaillés et mis en lien avec la région Moyen-Orient/Sahel pour en montrer les dimensions opératoires et les éventuelles limites. Dans un troisième temps, nous proposerons un exemple d’une recherche de terrain au Liban où le concept de « borderscape » récemment forgé au sein des border studies peut être utilisé avec profit.

This paper intends to reflect upon the conceptual link that exists between the « border » as a scientific object and the Middle East/Sahel region. Therefore, we would like to explore the field of research dedicated to this topic, namely the border studies. We aim at understanding how the conceptual tools of this field allow to systematize the study of borders in this region while we will also assess what this region can reveal from the stakes and limits of such conceptualization. To do so, we will first exmaine what is at stake in the interdisciplinary conceptualization that articules the notion of space, power and identity. Then, concepts and approaches will be explained in details and applied to the Middle East/Sahel region in order to highlight how they can work and what kind of limits they may confront. Third, as an example in Lebanon, we would like to show an analysis conducted in the region thanks to the concept of borderscape.
