From Venice (Italy) to Jeonju (Korea): the art of gondola making, intangible cultural heritage

The Republic of Korea is an active promoter of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the world, and thanks to the generosity of the Jeonju Government, ElFelze Association of Venice has won a prestigious award proving its perseverance and quality in transmitting and carrying on the traditional art of Gondola making, in Venice. The article presents the JIAPICH award and the Republic of South Korea system in connection with the work of gondola makers, and their effort for protecting and promoting this antique craftsmanship. The “living human treasures” system, as well as the Korean legislation on this topic are also introduced, with the aim of presenting a different perspective on the safeguarding of craftsmen/women involved in the preservation, transmission, and use of ICH in their daily lives.

La République de Corée a toujours été un promoteur actif du patrimoine culturel immatériel (PCI) dans le monde. Grâce à la générosité du gouvernement de la ville de Jeonju, l'association ElFelze de Venise a remporté un prix prestigieux prouvant sa persévérance et sa qualité dans la transmission et la perpétuation du patrimoine traditionnel : l'art de fabriquer des gondoles à Venise. L'article présente le prix JIAPICH et le système de la République de Corée du Sud pour la promotion et défense du patrimoine culturel immatériel, en relation avec le travail des fabricants de gondoles, et leurs efforts pour protéger et promouvoir cet artisanat antique. Le système des « trésors humains vivants » ainsi que la législation coréenne sur ce sujet sont également présentés dans le but de proposer une perspective différente sur la sauvegarde des artisans, hommes et femmes, impliqués dans la préservation, la transmission et l'utilisation du patrimoine culturel immatériel dans leur vie quotidienne.
