En anthropologie, les débats sur l’application de la discipline au développement s’intéressent plus à la question de la recherche qu’à celle de l’implication. Et, quand l’anthropologie impliquée est évoquée, c’est généralement pour en souligner les insuffisances au regard des exigences épistémologiques de l’ethnographie. Cependant, ainsi qu’on tente de le montrer ici, l’anthropologue travaillant sous contrat privé dans une agence ou dans une ong est plus souvent un praticien qu’un chercheur, appliqué ou non. Quoique toujours anthropologue, il fait un métier très différent de celui de chercheur qui ne peut donc pas être évalué dans les mêmes termes. C’est cette profession méconnue d’anthropologue praticien dans le développement que cet article cherche ici à réhabiliter.

Most of the recent debates about the implementation of anthropology in development were more interested with research, applied or not, than with involvement or commitment of the anthropologist.  When applied anthropology is mentioned, it is usually to highlight its weaknesses concerning the epistemological requirements of ethnography.  But, as we try to show here, the applied anthropologist working contractually in a private development agency or ngo is more often a practitioner than a researcher applied or not.  Although he is still an anthropologist, his occupation is very different than that of researcher and thus cannot be appraised or assessed in the same terms.  It is this unrecognized profession of being a practitioner anthropologist in development that this paper wants to rehabilitate.
