Conservé à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, le « Grand Fichier » de Roland Barthes rassemble plus d’un millier de fiches écrites entre 1968 et 1980. Entre journal intime et laboratoire théorique, ce vaste ensemble manuscrit constitue une archive majeure pour l’histoire des idées au xxᵉ siècle. Cet article présente ce dernier grand « inédit » de Barthes en cherchant à éclairer un regard et une pratique. Un regard : celui d’un intellectuel français de la seconde moitié́ du vingtième siècle, parmi les plus importants de sa génération, qui note dans le secret d’une écriture pour soi tout ce qu’il voit, lit, entend et expérimente au fil des jours. Une pratique : celle de la consignation sur « fiche » et de son ordonnancement mobilier (dans des boîtes ou des casiers), héritière de tout un courant d’enregistrement très matériel du savoir, tel qu’il a pu se pratiquer dans l’Europe lettrée jusqu’à la moitié du xxᵉ siècle.
Archived at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the “Grand Fichier” of Roland Barthes brings together more than a thousand handwritten documents (or “notecards”) spanning the years 1968 to 1980. Serving the purposes of a private diary and a theoretical lab, this vast collection of manuscripts constitutes a major archive for the history of ideas in the 20th century. This article presents Barthes’ last important “original,” while attempting to clarify its theoretical purchase and practice. His purchase: that of a French intellectual from the second half of the 20th century who was among the most important of his generation and who, in the secret space of private writing, notes everything that he sees, reads, hears, and experiences in his day-to-day life. His practice: notations on “notecards” and their storage arrangements (in boxes or filing cabinets), in line with the materialist vein of the recordkeeping of knowledge that was practiced in literate Europe up to the middle of the 20th century.
Das in der Bibliothèque nationale de France aufbewahrte „Grand ichier‟ von Roland Barthes umfasst mehr als tausend Karteikarten, die er zwischen 1968 und 1980 verfasste. Zwischen Tagebuch und theoretischem Versuchslabor stellt diese umfangreiche handschriftliche Sammlung ein wichtiges Archiv für die Ideengeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts dar. Dieser Beitrag stellt dieses letzte große unveröffentlichte Werk von Barthes vor und versucht dabei, sowohl eine besondere Sichtweise als auch eine Praxis zu beleuchten. Eine Sichtweise: die eines französischen Intellektuellen der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, der zu den bedeutendsten seiner Generation gehört und im Geheimnis einer an sich selbst gerichteten Schrift alles aufschreibt, was er im Laufe der Tage sieht, liest, hört und erfährt. Eine Praxis: die des Aufzeichnens auf Karteikarten und deren Einordnung (in Kästen oder Fächern), Erbe einer Strömung der materiellen Aufzeichnung von Wissen, wie sie im gebildeten Europa bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts praktiziert werden konnte.

Este artículo presenta esta última gran obra «inédita» de Barthes, intenta arrojar luz sobre su mirada y una práctica. Una mirada: la de un intelectual francés de la segunda mitad del siglo xx, uno de los más destacados de su generación, que registra en secreto todo lo que ve, lee, escucha y experimenta día a día. Una práctica: la de registrar en «fichas» y organizarlas en muebles (cajas o armarios), una práctica heredada de una corriente que registra de manera muy material el conocimiento y que era practicada en la Europa letrada hasta mediados del siglo xx.

Tra diario intimo e laboratorio teorico, questo vasto insieme di manoscritti costituisce un archivio fondamentale per la storia delle idee del xx secolo. L’articolo presenta quest’ultimo grande “inedito” di Barthes cercando di far luce su uno sguardo e una pratica. Uno sguardo: quello di un intellettuale francese della seconda metà del ventesimo secolo, tra i più importanti della sua generazione, che annota nel segreto di una scrittura per sé tutto ciò che vede, legge, sente e sperimenta giorno dopo giorno. Una pratica: quella dell’annotazione su “schede” e della sua disposizione nello spazio (in scatole o scaffali), erede di tutta una corrente di registrazione piuttosto materiale del sapere, come la si è praticata nell’Europa erudita fino alla metà del xx secolo.
