Après les guerres de la Révolution et de l’Empire, la Suisse doit repenser son armée et son administration. Cette période de renaissance de ces deux grandes institutions permet le développement d’une littérature militaire particulièrement riche au travers d’ouvrages et d’articles sur la science militaire. Il n'existe alors presque aucun contrôle sur les publications. C'est aussi à cette période que plusieurs revues militaires vont être fondées afin d'alimenter le débat en Suisse. Initialement, il n'existe qu'une revue de langue allemande : l’Allgemeine Schweizerische Militärzeitschrift. La Revue militaire suisse est en 1856 par Ferdinand Lecomte afin d'offrir une alternative en langue française aux officiers qui participent à la réflexion militaire. Parmi les sujets étudiés, la géographie militaire occupe une place particulière. On l’explore dès les premières années de la revue. En 1865, le major de Charrière de l'état-major fédéral écrit une première série d'articles sur le sujet. Par la suite, peu d'auteurs aborderont directement la géographie militaire de la Suisse. Cependant, de nombreux auteurs vont s'attacher à étudier de manière complète l'outil géographique au service du militaire. Ainsi, on trouve des articles techniques portant sur la cartographie, la topographie et sur la géodésie, mais on trouve aussi des articles portant sur l'influence de l'espace sur les opérations à tous les niveaux (Tactique, Opératif et Stratégique). Associés aux ouvrages publiés et aux revues de langue allemande, les travaux publiés au sein de la Revue militaire suisse témoignent des efforts des officiers helvétiques pour rationaliser une géographie militaire au service de leurs projets militaire.

After the wars of the Revolution and the Empire, Switzerland found itself in the imperative position of reevaluating both its military and administrative systems. This era of renaissance for these two pivotal institutions provided the fertile ground upon which a particularly extensive body of military literature flourished, encompassing a myriad of publications and articles dedicated to the discipline of military science. Notably, there was a conspicuous lack of stringent oversight over these publications during this period. It was also during this epoch that several military journals were established with the aim of enriching the intellectual discourse within Switzerland. Initially, there existed but one German-language periodical, the "Allgemeine Schweizerische Militärzeitschrift." However, in 1856, Ferdinand Lecomte took the initiative to establish the " Revue militaire suisse," specifically designed to provide a French-language alternative for officers deeply engaged in military contemplation.Among the diverse array of subjects under scholarly examination, military geography occupied a distinctive and prominent position. Its exploration commenced in the formative years of the " Revue militaire suisse". In 1865, Major de Charrière of the federal staff authored an initial series of scholarly articles on the subject. Subsequently, only a limited number of authors ventured into the direct examination of Switzerland's military geography. Nonetheless, a cohort of officers dedicated themselves to undertaking comprehensive analyses of the geographical tools at the disposal of the military. Consequently, readers encountered technical treatises addressing cartography, topography, and geodesy, alongside scholarly investigations into the manifold ways in which spatial considerations influenced military operations at all levels—ranging from the tactical to the operational and the strategic. In conjunction with the compendium of publications and German-language journals, the corpus of work disseminated within the pages of the " Revue militaire suisse " serves as a testament to the conscientious efforts of Swiss military officers in the systematic rationalization of military geography to enhance the efficacy of their military endeavors—a subject worthy of academic exploration.
