L’image du gringo chez Carlos Fuentes

Dans ce rapport à l’autre grinçant qu’impose la frontière entre le Mexique et les Etats-Unis, l’Étranger est trop souvent le Mexicain, le Latino, l’Hispano. Mais, si cette fois le Mexicain est « le Même », « l’Autre » devient alors l’Américain, le Yanqui, le Gringo. A son tour, il y est stigmatisé, reniflé, approché, jugé. Le personnage du Gringo, comme on le verra, multiple et récurrent, est intéressant chez Fuentes parce qu’il confronte le Mexicain à un autre, proche et pourtant si différent (l’étude permettra de relever les différences – subjectives - soulevées par Fuentes dans ses récits). Si Carlos Fuentes se penche sur cette figure paradoxale de ce « Gringo », heureux en son pays, mais irrémédiablement étranger ailleurs, c’est que l’écrivain mexicain se plaît à s’interroger sur ce désir d’étrangeté (entre rejet et amour, mystère et connaissance), intensément fictif et universel, réveillé par cette ligne frontière en forme de cicatrice identitaire.

In this scathing relation with the other, imposed by the border between Mexico and USA, the Stranger is too often the Mexican, the Latino, the Hispano. But, if this time, the Mexican is « the Same », « the Other » becomes the American, the Yankee, the Gringo. In this turn, he is stigmatized, sniffed, approached, judged. The character of the Gringo, as we will see, multiple and recurrent, is interesting at Fuentes because he confronts the Mexican to another, close and yet so different (the study will identify the differences –subjective- raised by Fuentes in his stories). If Carlos Fuentes is working on this paradoxical figure of the « Gringo », happy in his own country, but irremediably stranger elsewhere, it’s because the Mexican writer likes wondering about this desire of strangeness (between rejection and love, mystery and knowledge), intensely fictional and universal, awakened by this line border shaped scar od identity.
