Cet article étudie l’évolution de la catégorie statistique « favela », depuis le recensement des favelas du district fédéral de 1948 jusqu’au dernier recensement national de la population de 2010. Il met en évidence l’influence de l’expérience carioca sur la représentation de l’urbanisation informelle dans l’ensemble du Brésil. L’adoption de la catégorie statistique « favela », forgée à Rio de Janeiro, par les recensements nationaux de population, à partir de 1950, en est une manifestation remarquable. L’article ne discute pas des données quantitatives obtenues par les recensements, mais montre, à partir de l’évolution des définitions censitaires des favelas depuis la moitié du xxe siècle, comment les recensements nationaux ont adapté leur organisation pour prendre en compte les spécificités de ces espaces. Toutefois la statistique nationale a depuis lors retravaillé cette catégorie au point qu’elle a pu sembler inadéquate pour saisir la réalité de la ville qui l’avait vue naître.
