La recherche agronomique tropicale française est la fille du Second Empire colonial de la France. Cet article explique les transformations des institutions qui en ont eu la charge. Elles sont déterminées par l’évolution historique des relations de la France avec ses colonies ainsi que par les conflits entre institutions liés aux enjeux pour sa prise de contrôle et aux finalités dévolues à la recherche coloniale. Il met en évidence cinq grandes périodes qui scandent ces évolutions, depuis la fin du XIXe siècle jusqu’à la création du Cirad au milieu des années quatre-vingt.

French research in tropical agronomy is the offspring of the colonial policy of the Second Empire. This article aims to explain the changes in the relevant institutions. They are determined by the historical evolution of the relations of France with its colonies and the conflicts among institutions on account of power struggles as well as the goals awarded to colonial research. It brings to light five major periods which mark this evolution, from the end of the 19th century to the founding of the CIRAD in the mid-1980s.
