Un-Covering Stories You Never Heard Of: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s On the Shoulders of Giants and The History of (African-)American Basketball

Drawing from various disciplines from cultural history to semiology and communication studies, this article examines the part played by documentary films in the re-writing of the history of American basketball, focusing on former-player-turned-historian Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 2011 work, On the Shoulders of Giants: The Story of the Greatest Basketball Team You Never Heard Of. Indeed, this documentary film directed by Deborah Morales raises many questions regarding the treatment of African-American athletes in the writing of the history of American sport. First, this article focuses on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s political life and works, and especially his conscious effort as a historian to highlight forgotten stories and give them back their true historical dimension. Then, it shows how this documentary film turns the New York Renaissance team into a political myth which crystalized the politics of their time—the 1920s—as well as the new political concerns and efforts of the African-American community at the time of the filming of the documentary. Last, it questions the part played by documentary films in de-invisibilizing the history of African-American athletes, their filiation with autobiographies, and the politics of self-representation as a political instrument. In sum, this article uses Abdul-Jabbar’s work to reflect on a conscious, transmedia effort by African-American athletes, historians and scholars alike, to redefine the communication scheme and rewrite American and African-American history. Sport and athletes happen to play a key part in this process, as they have used their media exposure to push this very political agenda.

Dans une perspective d’histoire culturelle et d’études communicationnelles, cet article propose d’étudier le film documentaire On the Shoulders of Giants : The Story of the Greatest Basketball Team You Never Heard Of, écrit et produit par Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, ancien joueur de la National Basketball Association et auteur de nombreux ouvrages à dimension politique. Cette œuvre, réalisée par Deborah Morales, permet de percevoir l’effort de réécriture de l’histoire du basket-ball américain entrepris par certains athlètes afro-américains, une réécriture qui passe notamment par le film documentaire. Après un retour sur la vie et l’œuvre politisées d’Abdul-Jabbar en lien avec à l’histoire américaine des XXe et XXIe siècles, ce travail propose de déconstruire la démarche de mythification de l’équipe des New York Renaissance adoptée par le documentaire. En effet, le film transforme cette équipe alors largement mise au ban de l’histoire officielle du basket-ball américain en véritable mythe politique, tissant un fil rouge entre la Harlem Renaissance et l’Amérique d’Obama. Enfin, il s’agit d’interroger la démarche transmédiatique d’auto-représentation entreprise par certains athlètes afro-américains dans une perspective d’affirmation identitaire et politique, et pour laquelle le film documentaire incarne une étape signifiante. En somme, il s’agit d’explorer le film documentaire comme outil politique au service d’une « auto-représentation totale » de la communauté afro-américaine et de son histoire, et de montrer le rôle-clé joué par les athlètes dans ce processus aux racines profondes.

Combinando la historia cultural y los estudios de comunicación, este artículo analiza el documental On the Shoulders of Giants: The Story of the Greatest Basketball Team You Never Heard Of, escrito y producido por Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, antiguo jugador de la National Basketball Association y autor de numerosas obras con dimensión política. Esta obra producida por Deborah Morales nos permite considerar el esfuerzo por reescribir la historia del baloncesto estadounidense emprendido por ciertos deportistas afroamericanos, en particular a través del cine documental. Tras un repaso de la vida y la obra politizadas de Abdul-Jabbar en relación con la historia estadounidense de los siglos XX y XXI, este trabajo se propone deconstruir el proceso de mitificación del equipo New York Renaissance por parte del documental, que convierte este equipo, entonces ampliamente excluido de la historia oficial del baloncesto estadounidense, en un verdadero mito político que relaciona el Harlem Renaissance y la América de Obama. Por último, se trata de cuestionar el enfoque transmedia de la auto-representación emprendida por ciertos deportistas afroamericanos en una perspectiva de afirmación identitaria y política, y en la que el documental encarna una etapa significativa. En definitiva, se trata de explorar el documental como herramienta política al servicio de una "auto-representación total" de la comunidad afroamericana y de su historia, y de mostrar el papel clave desempeñado por los atletas en este proceso con raíces profundas.
