En juin 2016, un incendie détruit la majeure partie de l’église paroissiale de Trémel (Côtes-d’Armor), entraînant une chaîne de réactions et de solidarités au sein de la communauté des habitants du petit village breton et même bien au-delà. Une fois les mesures d’urgence prises, s’engage un long processus qui conduit à la restauration de l’édifice, achevée en juillet 2022. Une enquête auprès des personnes touchées par cette catastrophe, de près ou de loin, est lancée au printemps 2021, coordonnée par la région Bretagne et un chercheur du CNRS, en lien avec le chantier scientifique de Notre-Dame de Paris. L’étude vise à mettre en lumière les émotions et représentations suscitées par ce drame, mais aussi la manière dont ces dernières se confrontent et rencontrent les logiques administratives et institutionnelles. La construction par les enquêtés du récit du sinistre et de ses suites immédiates ou plus lointaines fait l’objet d’une attention particulière. Il apparaît assez clairement que le choc et le désir de retrouver l’église telle qu’elle était avant l’incendie président à la décision prise par la commune de restaurer son église à l’identique. Ce projet s’accorde avec le cadre réglementaire et déontologique propre aux monuments historiques, mais il est aussi rendu possible par des conditions financières exceptionnellement favorables. Il offre ainsi un point d’observation privilégié sur les mécanismes à l’œuvre du début de l’incendie à l’inauguration de l’église restaurée. Auprès des autres logiques, les émotions jouent un rôle moteur qui renforce ou reconfigure le rapport des Trémelois à l’édifice, dont elles accompagnent la reconstruction symbolique.

In June 2016 a fire almost completely destroyed the parish church of the little Breton village of Trémel in the Côtes-d’Armor department. This fire set off a chain of reactions and solidarity within the local population and beyond. Once the initial measures of securing the ruins had been taken, the long process of the restoration of the church commenced. It was completed in July 2022. In the spring of 2021, an enquiry was undertaken amongst the people affected by the incident, whether directly or indirectly, an enquiry coordinated by the Brittany region and involving a researcher from the CNRS. This enquiry was associated with the scientific research being undertaken in Paris after the fire which damaged the cathedral of Notre-Dame in April 2019. The ambition of the project was to identify the emotions and representations associated with the drama, but also how these came up against administrative and institutional logics. The enquiry concentrated in particular on the construction of accounts of the fire itself, its immediate consequences, and subsequent ones. It became clear that the shock of the disaster, and the desire to recover the church in its state of before the fire, decided the local authorities to have the church restored in identical form. This decision corresponds, of course, with the statutory and deontological position of the historic monuments service, but it was also made possible by the exceptionally favourable financial circumstances surrounding the restoration. The enquiry offers, then, a privileged viewpoint of the mechanisms at work from the beginning of the fire up to the inauguration of the restored church. Alongside other logics, emotions played a key part in reinforcing and redefining the relations between the local population and its church, emotions which accompany the symbolic reconstruction.
