Entre émotion et catastrophe patrimoniale

Si les humains semblent avoir de tout temps avoir dû faire face à des catastrophes, la mise en place des dispositifs de réparation depuis les années 1980 a révélé l’ampleur nouvelle de leurs incidences humaines. Mais, nouveau venu dans la rhétorique des catastrophes, le patrimoine cristallise désormais à son tour des émotions collectives dès qu’une tempête, une inondation ou une guerre lui portent atteinte. Or, envisager qu’il y ait « catastrophe patrimoniale » implique aussi la rencontre entre deux formes d’exceptionnalités : celle du patrimoine, dont l’existence suppose l’identification d’un bien « extra-ordinaire » du fait de sa valeur culturelle, et celle de l’événement, pensé lui-même comme rupture avec l’ordinaire d’un quotidien, ce qui suppose une bascule temporelle entre un avant et un après. Cet article propose de scruter de plus près les conditions du rapprochement entre « émotion », « catastrophe » et « patrimoine » afin d’envisager les apports épistémologiques des usages de la notion de « catastrophe patrimoniale ». Pour ce faire, il analyse la manière dont la catastrophe patrimoniale intervient comme opérateur de consensus, mais aussi les fragilités sociopolitiques qu’elle donne à voir.

Humans, of course, have always had to deal with disasters, but the creation of new forms of reparation since the 1980s has revealed the importance of their impact on humans. Heritage is a newcomer in the rhetoric about disasters, but now, in its turn, it crystallises collective emotions as soon as a storm, a flood or a war affect it. But to appreciate a ‘heritage disaster’, two forms of exceptionality have to come together, the exceptional qualities of the heritage identified as something extraordinary for its cultural values, and the exceptional event itself, understood as a break with the ordinariness of daily life, a tipping of temporal scales and the creation of a ‘before’ and an ‘after’. The aim of this article is to take a closer look at the conditions in which ‘emotion’, ‘disaster’ and ‘heritage’ come together, in order better to understand the epistemological contribution of the usages of the notion of ‘heritage disaster’. To do this, the article examines the way the heritage disaster intervenes as an operator of consensus but also the way it shows up socio-political fragilities.
