Le rugby de Samoa : entre fa’asāmoa et globalisation du sport

Le sport est un des rares espaces de la globalisation où un pays comme Samoa, société insulaire du Pacifique, peut rivaliser avec les plus grandes nations. Dans les Coupes du Monde de rugby, son équipe accomplit des performances avec un style spécifique, fait de plaquages virulents et d’une grande vivacité. Fondé sur le fa’aSāmoa, « la manière d’être et de faire à la samoane », le rugby de Samoa fait également partie de la globalisation dirigée par l’International Rugby Board. Cette institution s’est transformée depuis le début des années 1980 : alors qu’elle définissait les règles du jeu et organisait les rencontres internationales, elle mène aujourd’hui une politique de développement planétaire. En analysant la rencontre entre celle-ci et l’univers de Samoa, cet article entend éclairer le lien qui se noue entre les institutions internationales et les sociétés non‑occidentales dans le sport.

Sport is one of the few areas in globalisation where a country like Samoa, a Pacific island society, can compete with the wealthiest nations. In the Rugby World Cups, its national Samoan team accomplishes performances with a specific style, characterised by hard and extremely swift tackles. Based on the fa’aSāmoa (« how to be and to do in the Samoan way »), Samoan rugby is also part of the globalization of rugby led by the International Rugby Board (IRB). This institution has changed since the beginning of the 1980s: after initially being concerned with defining the rules of the game and organizing international matches, it is now actively leading the development of the game all around the planet. By analyzing the encounter between the IRB and the Samoan world, this article aims to throw light on the link between international institutions and non‑Western societies in the field of sport.
