La performance theory − théorie de la performance − est le nom donné aux États-Unis dans les années 1960 à une perspective interdisciplinaire de recherche en mouvement, née au confluent de courants de pensée et de pratiques ayant pour fondement le concept d’action/interaction (perform). Des champs spécialisés ont émergé en fonction de la spécificité des objets d’étude (sport, ingénierie, art, linguistique, anthropologie, psychologie du management). L’interaction institutionnalisée des arts vivants et des sciences humaines – philosophie, linguistique, anthropologie – s’est concrétisée dans la fondation des performance studies dont les deux pôles universitaires majeurs – New York University NYU (1980), et Northwestern University (1985) – présentent des identités fortes. L’article expose brièvement l’état de la situation en particulier dans les arts, l’esthétique, l’anthropologie et les sciences du vivant.

Performance theory is the name given in the United States in the 1960s to an interdisciplinary research perspective in progress born from the confluence of currents of thought and practice based on the concept of action/interaction. Specialized fields of research and practice have emerged according to the specificity of the objects of study (sport, engineering, art, linguistics, anthropology, psychology of management). Institutionalized interaction of the living arts and the humanities − philosophy, linguistics, anthropology − has resulted in the foundation of performance studies, whose two major academic centers − New York University NYU and Northwestern University − present strong identities. The article briefly describes the state of affairs, particularly in the arts, aesthetics, anthropology and life sciences.
