Dumont D’Urville’s passion for circumnavigating the world in the 1820s and 1830s is clearly conveyed in Duyker’s biography. D’Urville’s three trans-Pacific voyages, first in La Coquille (1822-25), the second and third in the same ship but renamed L’Astrolabe (1826-27, and 1837-41) were voluminously recorded by his hand, both during long spells at sea, and when back home in Toulon and Paris.
