De nombreux auteurs classiques mettent en relation avec le pays du Nil des Grecs réputés pour leur sagesse ou leur exemplarité. Les Sept Sages sont de ce nombre, ce qui peut se comprendre par la valorisation de la sagesse égyptienne, depuis les présocratiques ioniens, et surtout par Hérodote. L’évolution de la syllogè à l’époque hellénistique, en particulier sous l’impulsion des Alexandrins, semble s’être accompagnée d’une tendance à renforcer les contacts reconnus entre les Sept Sages et l’Égypte et, plus encore, avec le pharaon saïte Amasis (570-526), dernier grand souverain indépendant d’avant la conquête perse, lui-même devenu une figure de légende. Le présent article se propose de cerner et comprendre les liens qui rattachent les Sept Sages à l’Égypte et, en particulier, à Amasis, le pharaon philhellène.

Many classical authors draw a parallel between some Greeks, famous for their wisdom and their exemplarity, and the Nile land. The Seven Sages are no exception to this phenomenon, which can be compared to the enhancement of the Egyptian wisdom since the Ionian Pre-socratics, and especially by Herodotus. The development of the sylloge during the Hellenistic period, particularly under the impulse of the Alexandrians, seems to have reinforced the acknowledged contacts between the Seven Sages and Egypt, and even more with Amasis, the Saitic pharaoh (570-526), the last great and independent sovereign before the Persian conquest, becoming himself a legendary figure. Therefore, this article tries to define and clarify the bonds between the Seven Sages and Egypt, especially with Amasis, the philhellenic pharaoh.
