It affords an insight into Greek society and at the same time patterns of human behaviour in general, and so its interest goes beyond Athenian fourth-century BCE society, the core on which it is based. In effect, Esther Eidinow’s new book, which has several points of contact with her previous one,can be said to take as its lemma the trials of three women: Theoris of Lemnos, Ninon and Phryne.
