Lang kouter (lankouta), l’argot des tailleurs d’Elliant (Finistère)

Au cours du XIXe siècle se constituèrent à Elliant un certain nombre de familles de tailleurs, dont celle dont je suis issu. Les tailleurs allaient en journée travailler à leur métier par petits groupes familiaux (mari et femme, mère et fils, groupes de frères et sœurs, etc.) dans les fermes, où ils étaient nourris. Dans la dernière période (après 1900), ils habitaient tous au bourg mais certains avaient autrefois habité dans des villages proches, sorte d’agglomérat lâche de petites maisons d’artisans. Certains avaient alors été artisans paysans, cultivant à la main des pentys avec une ou deux vaches. C’est dans ce milieu que s’est développé un argot breton, comparable à ceux qui ont été décrits dans les villes du nord de la Bretagne par Gourvil, et à celui de Pont-l’Abbé, le langaj-chon.

During the 19th century, a number of tailoring families formed in Elliant, including my own. The tailors went out during the day to work at their trade in small family groups (husband and wife, mother and son, groups of brothers and sisters, etc.) on the farms, where they were fed. In the last period (after 1900), they all lived in the market town, but some had previously lived in nearby villages, a sort of loose agglomeration of small craftsmen's houses. Some of them had been small-scale farmers, with one or two cows. It was in this environment that a Breton slang developed, comparable to those described in the towns of northern Brittany by Gourvil, and to that of Pont-l'Abbé, langaj-chon.
