Depuis la première moitié du xviie siècle (et ce jusqu’à aujourd’hui), les textes écrits en occitan, sur tout l’espace géographique de cette langue pendant la période considérée, sont comme traversés par les multiples réalisations d’un personnage qui apparaît rapidement comme un type : le franchimand. Ce type présente comme caractéristique première d’être affublé d’un langage spécifique, que l’on qualifiera de francitan, pour signaler son identité contradictoire, à tout le moins composite. Le franchimand, en effet, n’utilise pas l’occitan pour s’exprimer (bien qu’il en soit capable) pas plus que le français (par incapacité). Il emploie une variété linguistique (stylistique ?) intermédiaire, dont le « dosage » peut varier selon les textes, les circonstances et les époques.

Since the first half of the 17th century (and up to the present day), texts written in Occitan, throughout the geographical area of this language during the period under consideration, are as if crossed by the multiple achievements of a character who quickly appears as a type: the Franchimand. The first characteristic of this type is that it is endowed with a specific language, which we shall call Francitan, to indicate its contradictory, or at least composite, identity. The Franchimand does not use Occitan to express himself (although he is capable of doing so) any more than he uses French (out of incapacity). He uses an intermediate linguistic (stylistic?) variety, the ‘dosage’ of which may vary according to the texts, circumstances and times.
