L’auteure examine ici brièvement un lien de causalité souvent méconnu entre genre et transmission de la langue bretonne. Engagées dans un processus d’exode rural et de promotion sociale conditionnée par la maîtrise du français, les femmes ont en général été à l’avant-garde de l’abandon du breton. Leur rôle prépondérant dans l’éducation des jeunes enfants aura en outre contribué à renforcer cette dynamique. Il existe cependant des femmes qui ont conservé une image positive du breton, celles qui ont développé une relation forte avec leur père, jouant le rôle d’initiateur à cette langue.

The author takes a brief look at an often underestimated causal link between gender and the transmission of the Breton language. Experiencing a process of rural exodus and social advancement conditional on language shift to French, women have generally been at the forefront of the abandonment of Breton. Their predominant role in the upbringing of young children also helped to reinforce this trend on a broader scale. However, there are also women who have retained a positive image of Breton: those who had developed a strong relationship with their father, who played the role of initiator into the language.
