La prima parte di questo studio esamina il mito di fondazione di Praeneste ad opera di Caeculo, figlio di Vulcano, distinguendo nella tradizione un nucleo arcaico e uno tardo-repubblicano. Il primo è l’unico basato su fonti epicorie noto per il Lazio. Lo studio del secondo consente di riconoscere l’influenza di importanti gentes come Caecili e Veturii sulle relazioni con le elites latine. La seconda parte esamina i miti relativi alle fondazioni odissiache a Roma e nel Lazio: l’esame delle tradizioni, riconducibili alla fine del VI a.C., porta alla riconsiderazione del dossier sui rapporti tra Roma, le città latine e Cuma. In questo quadro le carestie che accompagnarono la nascita della Repubblica vengono messe in relazione con l’avvio di culti ctoni di tipo greco a Roma, Gabi e Praeneste e con il ruolo delle gentes egemoni in quel periodo.
