In questo studio si presentano i risultati preliminari di una campagna di scavi condotta nel 2012 dalla Soprintendenza speciale per i beni archeologici di Roma (sede di Ostia) per motivi di tutela nell’immediato suburbio orientale di Ostia presso il Castello di Giulio II. Le indagini hanno consentito di individuare e rilevare manufatti e strutture murarie già in parte visti in passato, però mai oggetto di studi sistematici : si tratta dei resti di un edificio risalente alla media età imperiale e ampiamente ristrutturato nel pieno IV sec. d.C (domus ?), di un mausoleo databile tra tardo antico e alto medioevo, e di un tratto di strada basolata. Le ricerche hanno confermato la notevole importanza di questa parte del territorio ostiense, caratterizzato dalla presenza di un’articolata rete stradale, di estesi settori funerari e di edifici a carattere residenziale e produttivo.

This study presents the preliminary results of an excavation that the Soprintendenza speciale per i beni archeologici di Roma (sede di Ostia) conducted in 2012 in the eastern suburb of Ostia, by the Castle of Julius II, as part of its activity of national heritage safeguard. The excavation identified and documented artifacts and structures that had already been partly seen in the past, but had never been the object of systematic study. They consist in the remains of a building, possibly a domus, built in the 2nd century AD and extensively renovated in the 4th century, a mausoleum dating between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages and a stretch of paved road. Research has proved the great importance of this part of the Ostian territory, marked by the presence of an extensive road network, vast cemeteries, residential and productive buildings.
