L’objectif de cet article est de démontrer les relations étroites qui existent entre Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) et l’impressionnisme. Si le nom du romancier est rarement associé au mouvement, en réalité l’esthétique impressionniste se greffe tardivement (1914), d’une façon inédite, sur d’autres influences littéraires et artistiques, comme la sensibilité et l’imagerie romantique des préraphaélites, la rigueur et l’économie lexicale d’un Flaubert et d’un Maupassant, au flux de conscience de James, également expérimenté par Conrad. L’impressionnisme fordien est donc l’un des éléments d’une personnalité complexe, en réalité encore très peu connue en France dans son intégralité. L’esthétique impressionniste se trouve alors au creuset de plusieurs tendances, et Ford est à même d’en reprendre certaines caractéristiques afin de faire éclater la chronologie narrative de ses romans. On arrive ainsi à la mouvance moderniste du début du xxe siècle, à laquelle le nom de Ford doit désormais être rattaché sans hésitation.
