This article describes the historical context that prompted Sakharov to warn party leaders of the dangers of the H‑bomb and call for the respect of human rights. It also seeks to point out Khrushchev’s and Brezhnev’s different approaches toward Sakharov’s criticism. In addition to discussing the threefold model of the KGB consisting in educating, warning and only finally arresting the renegades, it sheds light on Andropov’s repeated appeals to Brezhnev to speak with Sakharov. Even though Sakharov himself was also eager to talk with Brezhnev, the two men never met. It was in the context of the Cold War that the politburo eventually decided when was the best moment to get rid of Sakharov, causing as less damage as possible to the Soviet Union’s prestige and thus re‑establishing the limits of the sayable.
