Résumé 0

All along the Brexit negotiations, the Irish border has emerged as the major stumbling block. Before the Irish border issue was eventually ‘solved’, the principle that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed” meant that the Brexit talks could not move on to the next phase. British and European policymakers were confronted with the challenges of where exactly the post-exit border would lie and how ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ it would be. Within a little less than a year, negociations in Brussels produced two legal documents with different specific arangements on the Irish border. This paper is meant to explore the differences between Theresa May’s brexit deal and Boris Johnson’s deal -containing a revised protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland- and their significance in terms of trade, economiçc choices and international relations.
