What is a doctorate concerning landscape ?

Based on the realisation that research concerning the landscape is a fact, that during thirty years seminars have been dedicated to this subject in schools of landscape architecture, this article exposes the problems inherent to the creation of a doctorate concerning the landscape and demonstrates that these problems stem from an object and a disciplinary field that are difficult to define. It then analyses a sample of ground-breaking documents in order to identify the major questions and the attempts at answers that still nourish the field of research in landscape architecture today. It indicates that these ways of conceiving research, the part played by this activity in professional schools, its social role, the field it covers and the disciplines that support it, are often all structured around three oppositions : art/science, usefulness/disinterestedness, creation of a work of art/furthering of knowledge. Lastly, it exposes assumptions concerning the scope of a Doctorate with majors in landscape design, in landscape art criticism and in landscape sciences. It then suggests that by attempting to go beyond these oppositions, which boil down to the nature/culture dichotomy, only a last major concerning a theoretical landscape science would be appropriate. 

Partant du constat que la recherche relative au paysage existe, que des séminaires ont été consacrés à ce sujet dans les écoles du paysage depuis trente ans, cet article expose les difficultés inhérentes à l’invention d’un doctorat concernant le paysage et montre qu’elles découlent d’un objet et d’un champ disciplinaire difficiles à cerner. Il analyse ensuite un échantillon de ces documents pionniers afin de repérer les grandes questions et les tentatives de réponses qui alimentent toujours le champ de la recherche en paysage. Il indique que ces façons de penser la recherche, la place et le but que cette activité occupe dans des écoles à finalité professionnelle, le sens sociétal qui est le sien, le domaine qu’elle recouvre et les disciplines qui la portent, sont structurés autour de trois oppositions : art/science, utilité/gratuité, création d’une œuvre/production de connaissances nouvelles. Il expose enfin des hypothèses sur ce que recouvrirait un doctorat en paysagisme, en critique d’art du paysage, en science(s) du paysage. Il esquisse alors l’idée que s’efforçant de dépasser ces oppositions, qui se ramènent à la dichotomie nature/culture, seule cette dernière mention en science du paysage serait satisfaisante.
