Comprendre ce qui est wisigothique dans la culture artistique et matérielle n’est pas aisé à la lumière des recherches les plus récentes. Mais ce n’est pas nouveau. La définition des arts wisigothiques a été l’un des problèmes historiographiques qui a le plus préoccupé les spécialistes, espagnols ou étrangers, du monde hispanique. Cet article offre une vision panoramique sur le sujet, des débuts d’une critique historique sur le monde matériel wisigoth et la conscience de celui-ci au Moyen Âge aux tendances les plus récentes de la recherche qui remettent en question la spécificité wisigothique ou, au contraire, la revendiquent.

Understanding the definition of “Visigoth” in artistic and material culture in regards to the latest research on the subject is no simple task, and never has been. Defining the term has been one of the most engaging problems facing specialists of Hispanic art and culture, in Spain and elsewhere. This article offers an overview of the topic, from the first historical analyses of the material culture of the Visigoths and the way in which it was perceived in the Middle Ages, to the most recent research, which either questions the validity of the notion of Visigoth as a unique cultural trait or, alternatively, reasserts its legitimacy.

In Anbetracht der jüngsten Forschungen ist es nicht einfach, das Westgotische in der künstlerischen und materiellen Kultur zu verstehen. Allerdings ist das nicht neu. Die Definition der westgotischen Kunst war eines der historiografischen Probleme, das die spanischen und internationalen Spezialisten am meisten beschäftigt hat. Dieser Artikel verschafft einen breiten Überblick über das Thema: ausgehend von den Anfängen einer geschichtlichen Kritik der westgotischen Materialkultur und deren Bewusstsein im Mittelalter, hin zu den aktuellen Forschungstendenzen, die entweder die westgotische Spezifik in Frage stellen oder sie im Gegenteil geradezu einfordern.

Comprendere ciò che è realmente “visigoto” nella cultura artistica e materiale non è, alla luce delle ultime richerche, un compito semplice. Ma non è un fatto nuovo: la definizione delle arti visigote è uno dei problemi storiografici che hanno maggiormente interessato gli specialisti, spagnoli o stranieri, del mondo ispanico. Questo articolo offre una visione panoramica sull’argomento, dagli albori di una critica storica sul mondo materiale visigoto e la coscienza di quest’ultimo nel Medioevo, sino alle tendenze più attuali della ricerca, che alternativamente rimettono in causa o riaffermano l’effettiva specificità visigota.

Entender qué es visigodo en cultura artística y material no es fácil a la luz de las investigaciones más recientes. Pero esto no es algo nuevo. La definición de las artes visigodas ha sido uno de los problemas historiográficos que más ha preocupado a los estudiosos del mundo hispánico nacionales y foráneos. En este artículo se ofrece una visión panorámica sobre el asunto, desde los inicios de una crítica histórica sobre el mundo material visigodo y la consciencia del mismo en la Edad Media, hasta las tendencias de investigación más recientes que cuestionan lo visigodo o, por el contrario, lo reivindican.
