Les bourses et les subventions accordées par trois fondations distinctes en faveur de la recherche sur l’art des États-Unis représentent chaque année un soutien de quinze à vingt millions de dollars. Ces financements privés ont contribué pour une large part à l’évolution et à la maturation de cette discipline. Les trois organisations qui distribuent cet argent – essentiellement les Luce, Terra et Wyeth Foundations – sont très différentes en ce qui concerne leurs fondateurs, leurs priorités, leurs dimensions, leur organisation administrative et leur impact. Quelles sont les répercussions de ces investissements privés massifs dans le domaine de l’histoire de l’art aux États-Unis ? Les priorités de ces fondations sont-elles devenues les priorités de cette discipline ?

Grants and fellowships from three different foundations amounting annually to $15- $20 million support scholarship on the art of the United States. To a large extent this private funding has subsidized the growth and maturation of the field. The three organizations providing this money – principally the Luce, Terra, and Wyeth Foundations – are strikingly different in terms of their founders, priorities, sizes, programs, administrative organizations, and effects. What are the ramifications of this abundance of private funding in the field of US art history? Have the priorities of the foundations become the priorities of the field?

Drei verschiedene Stiftungen unterstützen jährlich die Erforschung der Kunst der USA durch Stipendien und Subventionen in Höhe von fünfzehn bis zwanzig Millionen Dollar. Diese privaten Gelder haben zu großen Teilen zur Entwicklung und Vertiefung des Fachgebiets geführt. Die drei Stiftungen – Luce, Terra und Wyeth Foundations – unterscheiden sich in Bezug auf ihre Gründer, ihre Prioritäten, Dimensionen, Verwaltungsstrukturen und Handlungsspielräume. Welche Auswirkungen haben diese massiven privaten Investitionen auf den Bereich der Kunstwissenschaft in den USA? Inwiefern sind die Prioritäten dieser Stiftungen auch die Prioritäten des Fachs geworden?
