Dans Science Fiction and the Theatre, Ralph Willingham (1994) expose les nombreux malentendus entre science-fiction et théâtre : tantôt le théâtre de science-fiction n’existe pas car la science-fiction s’épanouit au cinéma ou dans le roman ; tantôt le théâtre de science-fiction existe, mais il est simplement mauvais, tout particulièrement avant les coups d’éclat de Shaw ou de Maïakovski dans les années 1920. Ce « mauvais » théâtre toutefois, entre 1880 et 1920, permet d’aborder les origines de la science-fiction et ses frictions avec le spectaculaire et l’imaginaire. Il offre également l’occasion, avec Becque, Feydeau ou Curel, d’interroger la science-fiction avant la science-fiction : genre, registre, motif ?

Among the many misunderstandings and mishaps of science fiction and theatre exposed by Ralph Willingham in Science Fiction and the Theatre (1994), he focuses in particular on two hypotheses : one, there is no such thing as science fiction in theatre, because the stage cannot compete with movies or novels ; two, science fiction theatre exists, but it is too bad to be accepted by critics and readers, especially before the 1920s and talented authors such as Shaw or Mayakovsky. Nevertheless, “bad” theatre is a way to explore science fiction before science fiction theory : is conjectural science in dramas by Becque, Feydeau or Curel to be seen as a genre, a pattern or a tonality ?
