Can the Children Speak?

Dans cette contribution, je poserai les questions « les enfants peuvent-ils parler ? » et « qui parle ? » à partir d’un terrain ethnographique auprès d’enfants vulnérables. Dans le cadre d’une recherche sur les expériences d’enfants diagnostiqués d’un trouble de l’attention et de l’hyperactivité (TDAH), menée dans la Pologne contemporaine, je proposerai une interprétation de la voix des enfants comme « émergente » et conditionnée par la réalité sociale quotidienne des enfants qui participent à l’étude, par les circonstances du projet ethnographique, par un débat politique plus large et par les infrastructures matérielles et sociales. Je présenterai également mon propre combat, les tensions relevant de la responsabilité éthique, mes biais et mes attentes, ainsi que la manière dont ils ont évolué au cours de l’échange ethnographique et intersubjectif. Une différenciation entre voix politisée et voix quotidienne des enfants sera notamment opérée.

In the following pages I will ask the questions “can the children speak?” and “who is speaking?” in the context of an ethnographic study with vulnerable children. Reflecting upon my own project studying the experiences of children diagnosed with ADHD, conducted in contemporary Poland, I will put forward an interpretation of children’s voices as “emergent” and conditioned by the everyday social reality of children participating in social research, by the circumstances of an ethnographic project, and by the wider political debate and the material and social infrastructures. I will also present my own struggles with ethical responsibility, and discuss my biases and expectations and how these evolved during an intersubjective ethnographic exchange. I will here differentiate between the politicized voice and the everyday voice of children.
