Comment passer outre par rapport à l’apparence ? Notre regard est souvent pris au piège de la difformité corporelle. Il impose à celui ou celle qui en est porteur le poids du rejet social. Loin de négliger l’état de sidération produit par ce qui excède notre idée de l’humain, il faudra décrire phénoménologiquement cet obstacle du regard ; après quoi seulement peut être envisagée la dimension éthique de la reconnaissance d’autrui non pas malgré son apparence, mais à travers elle. La déformation corporelle génère une sorte d’outrance involontaire, une outrance définie comme ce qui déborde le regard, crée de l’incertitude quant à l’humanité même d’autrui. Peut-on dès lors retourner cette outrance en subversion ? Lorsque l’on est porteur d’un corps qui de toute façon sera regardé, pourquoi ne pas revendiquer la visibilité de ce corps, mettre au travail une outrance maîtrisée par la volonté de la diriger contre le regard qui altère ?

How to override the appearance? Our gaze is often trapped by bodily deformity, which imposes on the person who carries it the weight of social rejection. We must not neglect the state of shattering produced by what exceeds the human being, as this excess will be necessary to phenomenologically describe the obstacles of our gaze. After this, the ethical dimension of the recognition of the other could be considered: not despite his/her appearance, but through it. The bodily deformity creates a kind of involuntary excess which could be defined as something going beyond the gaze by producing uncertainty about the humanity of the others. Can we interpret this excess in terms of subversion? When one is bearing a body that will anyway be the object of the other’s gaze, why not claiming the visibility of this body? Why not trying to control the excess in order to direct it against the gaze which defies?
