Le roman pour enfants et adolescents Mario und die Tiere (1928) de Waldemar Bonsels dispose d’un spectre d’anthropomorphisme qui va d’un anthropomorphisme naïf d’enfants jusqu’à l’évocation de la possibilité d’une perspective thériomorphe. En se référant à des recherches de psychologie comportementale, de neuropsychologie et à des études sur l’empathie, cet article tente de rendre plausibles et d’analyser des séquences de contact entre l’homme et l’animal, dans lesquelles le jeune héros anthropomorphise les animaux. Le diagnostic d’une tendance naturelle à anthropomorphiser les animaux est confronté aux effets ambivalents de l’anthropomorphisme, notamment l’acte de domestication des animaux sauvages. À partir d’une analyse du texte littéraire, on se demandera dans quelle mesure un anthropomorphisme critique appliqué pourrait permettre de mieux comprendre les animaux sans les ontologiser ni confondre altérité avec infériorité.
