Un plaidoyer théologique pour la méthode historico-critique

Alors que la méthode historico-critique semble faire l’objet d’une désaffection au bénéfice d’approches telles que la narratologie ou la rhétorique, la Commission biblique pontificale en a rappelé la légitimité (1994) : la méthode se justifie en raison du caractère historique de la Révélation. Le recours à celle-ci, sans exclusive, se fonde sur l’herméneutique théologique pratiquée par l’Église catholique depuis Dei Verbum : le lien entre exégèse et théologie se noue dans l’interprétation incessante que la communauté chrétienne fait de l’Écriture. C’est la théologie qui légitime la méthode en lui donnant son statut. Or si l’exégèse peut constituer pour la dogmatique une autorité critique salutaire, elle doit se libérer de la tentation d’hégémonie théologique. Elle remplit sa mission au service de la Révélation quand elle permet aux chrétiens de mieux lire l’Écriture.

While the historical-critical method seemed to have been put aside in favour of approaches such as narratology or rhetoric, the Pontifical Biblical Commission reminded us of the legitimacy of the former (1994): the historical-critical approach is justified by the historical character of the Revelation. Resorting to it, without excluding other approaches, is based on the theological hermeneutic that the Catholic Church has been practising since Dei Verbum: the link between exegesis and theology has been built up in the continuous interpretation of the Holy Scripture by the Christian community. It is theology that gives its legitimacy to the method as it gives it a status. If exegesis is to become a beneficial critical authority for dogmatic theology, it will have to give up the temptation of a theological supremacy. It then fulfils its mission in the service of Revelation when it allows Christians to read the Scripture more aptly.
