Au-delà des réalités qu’elles s’efforcent de saisir, les notions de « fragilité » ou de « vulnérabilité » s’imposent, actuellement, dans le discours et les représentations. De quoi sont-elles alors le symptôme ? Si, jadis, des outils sociologiques orientaient majoritairement l’interprétation du champ social et sociétal, aujourd’hui une certaine tendance à la psychologisation déplace les manières d’appréhender la question. Nous assistons, ainsi, au passage d’une « herméneutique » sociale centrée sur l’injustice à une appréhension de la victime et de son ressenti (déprime, mal-être…). Il convient, alors, de montrer les raisons pour lesquelles les thématiques de la « fragilité » s’imposent, à notre époque, avec tant d’évidence. Ensuite, il semble nécessaire de conceptualiser les diverses notions en distinguant la faillibilité, la fragilité, la vulnérabilité et la faiblesse. Enfin, après ce « diagnostic du présent » (Foucault) et cette clarification conceptuelle, il semble possible de promouvoir une politique de la fragilité.

Beyond the realities they attempt to grasp, the notions of “fragility” or “vulnerability” impose themselves nowadays in discourse and representations. What are they symptomatic of? If formerly sociological tools mainly oriented the interpretation of the social and societal domain, today a certain tendency towards psychologising shifts the way of putting the question. We also witness the passage from a social “hermeneutics” centred on injustice to an understanding of the victim and her personal experience (depression, unhappiness…). It is thus important first of all to show the reasons why the theme of “fragility” imposes itself as an evidence in our time. We must then conceptualise the various notions by distinguishing fallibility from fragility, vulnerability and weakness. Finally, and only after establishing this “diagnosis of the present” (Foucault) and clarifying its concepts, it becomes possible to promote a politics of fragility.
