Développée par des théologiens d’Asie depuis les années 1970, la « Théologie de l’harmonie » peut être présentée comme un ensemble de thèmes et de centres d’intérêt mis en commun, mais aussi, et sans doute de façon plus importante, comme un « style théologique » aux caractéristiques asiatiques. L’article rappelle le contexte dans lequel a pris place cette tentative. Il décrit donc la (dia-)logique propre aux théologiens d’Asie et la manière dont ils ont stratégiquement recours à des symboles et à des récits. L’article s’oriente ensuite vers une exploration des richesses et des tensions condensées dans le terme « harmonie » et plaide pour une plus grande rigueur herméneutique, alors que l’entreprise théologique asiatique continue de se développer. Est également affirmée la fécondité des approches ici analysées pour charger le langage théologique d’une signification et d’une créativité renouvelée, en Asie et au-delà.Cet article est suivi d’un long résumé français (p. 284-285 – Annexe)

Developed by Asian theologians from the 1970s onwards, “Theology of Harmony” can be approached as a set of shared topics and concerns, but also, and even more importantly, as a “theological style” with Asian characteristics. The article first recalls the context in which such endeavour has been taking place. It thus describes the (dia-)logic proper to Asian theologians and the way they strategically make use of symbols and narratives. It moves on to investigate the riches and tensions that the term “Harmony” encapsulates, pleading for accrued hermeneutical rigor as the Asian theological enterprise continues to unfold. It also asserts the fecundity of the approaches here studied for loading the theological language with renewed meaning and inventiveness, in Asia and beyond.
