Cet article examine quelques procédés linguistiques ou rhétoriques souvent employés dans les enquêtes de terrain dites compréhensives, notamment lorsque le groupe étudié est situé en bas de la hiérarchie sociale. La relation empathique à l’égard des enquêtés est un moyen de connaissance pour le sociologue. L’attitude empathique exprimée dans le texte est, quant à elle, une information, peu articulée, sur l’auteur : sur sa manière d’appréhender les participants, les événements, etc. Les procédés employés sont analogues à ceux qu’emploie un romancier pour représenter les personnages de son récit. Ils distinguent les éléments dramatiques centraux de ceux annexes. Ils expriment la proximité de l’auteur à l’égard de ses héros, concentrent l’attention sur leur monde vécu et leur humanité. Ils sensibilisent l’audience, au risque souvent d’appauvrir cette humanité.

This article examines some of the linguistic or rhetorical methods often used in so-called comprehensive field work, especially when the group under study is at the bottom of the social hierarchy. The empathetic relationship with the respondents is a means of knowledge for the sociologist. The empathetic attitude expressed in the text is, for its part, information, little articulated, on the author: on his way of understanding the participants, events, etc. The processes used are similar to those used by a novelist to represent the characters in his story. They distinguish between the central and the ancillary drama elements. They express the author’s closeness to his heroes, focus attention on their lived world and their humanity. They sensitize the audience, often to the risk of impoverishing this humanity.

Este artículo examina algunos procesos lingüísticos o retóricos frecuentemente empleados en las llamadas investigaciones de campo comprensivas, especialmente cuando el grupo estudiado está situado en la parte inferior de la jerarquía social. La relación empática con los encuestados es un medio de conocimiento para el sociólogo. La actitud empática expresada en el texto es, por su parte, una información, poco articulada, sobre el autor: sobre su manera de entender a los participantes, los acontecimientos, etc. Los procedimientos empleados son análogos a los que emplea un novelista para representar a los personajes de su narración. Distinguen los elementos dramáticos centrales de los anexos. Expresan la cercanía del autor a sus héroes, concentran la atención en su mundo vivido y su humanidad. Sensibilizan a la audiencia, a menudo con el riesgo de empobrecer esta humanidad.
