Depuis trente ans, il n’y a plus d’édition de Karl May en langue française. Gloire des lettres allemandes, cet auteur est peu connu en France, pays qui fut le premier à le traduire, dès 1881, mais où il n’a guère suscité d’intérêt critique en plus d’un siècle, lequel était souvent fondé, lorsqu’il existait, sur certaines méprises historiques ou littéraires. Serait-il « trop tard en France pour Karl May » ? La réception française n’est pourtant pas inexistante, mais elle est dispersée en de multiples lieux qu’il s’agit d’abord d’inventorier.
