Ignacio Ramos-Gay, « “L’Affaire de la rue de Lourcine” dans la culture populaire française (1857-1914) », Studi Francesi, ID : 10.4000/studifrancesi.22084
The aim of this paper is to explore the influence of Labiche’s, Martin’s and Monnier’s L’Affaire de la rue de Lourcine in French popular culture, from its premiere (26 March 1857) to the First World War. In order to refute the systematic appeal to purely aesthetic criteria when stating the literary quality of the play, I first examine the social impregnation of the characters’ most famous words and expressions in contemporary French vocabulary. I then turn to the influence of the play upon its theatrical heirs, as these repeated the plot’s most notorious traits. Thirdly, I analyse the impact of Labiche’s and his collaborator’s farce upon the society of their time as a source of inspiration for actual murders. I conclude with a few observations on how the farce is adapted to minor media such as the radio and cinema.
