L’icône de Kaftoun (milieu-troisième quart du xiiie siècle) est un panneau biface avec la représentation de la Vierge Hodigitria (Conductrice) sur un côté et le baptême du Christ sur l’autre. La scène de baptême met l’accent sur la nature divine de Jésus annoncée et préfigurée par les prophètes de l’Ancien Testament représentés dans les angles supérieurs du panneau. L’icône avec ses deux faces, la Vierge Hodigitria soulignant la nature humaine de Jésus, et son baptême insistant sur sa nature divine, affirme l’union hypostatique des deux natures de Jésus. Certains textes anciens associent le rite du baptême à des rivières et autres sources d’eau, où la sanctification pouvait avoir lieu. C’est pourquoi le lien de l’icône de Kaftoun avec le rituel du baptême le jour de l’épiphanie est plausible, d’autant que le monastère se situe au bord du fleuve Nahr el-Jaouz.
