Le texte traduit ici pour la première fois en français est paru dans un recueil de 1960 édité par Joseph Casagrande, In the Company of Man. Vingt anthropologues, parmi lesquels Raymond Firth, Robert Lowie ou encore Margaret Mead, étaient invités à faire le portrait de leur informateur, figure à la fois banale et mystérieuse du travail ethnographique. Ici, l’anthropologue américain John Adair raconte son arrivée dans un village pueblo et sa rencontre avec Marcus Tafoya, vétéran de l’armée américaine. Le retour sur son expérience de l’armée fournit à Tafoya l’occasion d’évoquer un espace de liberté nouveau et de se faire à son tour anthropologue. Mais la confiance et l’amitié entre les deux hommes s’arrêtent aux frontières du village, où le silence et le secret reprennent leurs droits.

This text first appeared in a 1960 collection edited by Joseph Casagrande, In the Company of Man. Twenty anthropologists, including Raymond Firth, Robert Lowie and Margaret Mead, were invited to sketch a portrait of their informant, that ordinary yet mysterious figure of anthropological work. Here, anthropologist John Adair recounts his arrival in a pueblo village and his encounter with Marcus Tafoya, a US army veteran. By looking back at his army experience, Tafoya had the chance to evoke a new realm of freedom and to play the role of anthropologist himself. But the two men’s trust and friendship only went as far as the village boundaries, where silence and secrecy reasserted their rights.
