Si la méthode transcendantale, chez Hermann Cohen, consiste à partir du « fait de la science » pour en dégager les conditions de possibilité, Martial Gueroult reprend à son compte cette méthode afin de mettre en évidence les conditions de possibilité non pas de la science, mais de la pluralité des systèmes qui jalonnent l’histoire de la philosophie. L’enjeu pour le philosophe français est non seulement de garantir à l’histoire de la philosophie un statut proprement philosophique, en faisant coexister des systèmes en apparence contradictoires, mais aussi et surtout de garantir à la philosophie son autonomie vis-à-vis des sciences. Or, nous tenterons de montrer ici que la démarche cohénienne nous semble, à bien des égards, plus apte à garantir ces deux objectifs.

Während die die transzendentale Methode bei Hermann Cohen darin besteht, von dem „Factum der Wissenschaft“ auszugehen, um die Bedingungen der Möglichkeit herauszuarbeiten, übernimmt Martial Gueroult diese Methode nicht, um die Bedingungen der Möglichkeit der Wissenschaft herauszuarbeiten, sondern vielmehr diejenigen der Pluralität der Systeme, die die Geschichte der Philosophie durchziehen. Die Herausforderung für den französischen Philosophen besteht dabei nicht allein darin, der Geschichte der Philosophie einen wahrhaft philosophischen Status zu verleihen, indem er scheinbar widersprüchliche Systeme koexistieren lässt, sondern auch und vor allem darin, die Autonomie der Philosophie gegenüber den Wissenschaften zu garantieren. Es wird zu zeigen versucht, dass der Ansatz Cohens in vielerlei Hinsicht besser geeignet ist, diese beiden Ziele zu gewährleisten.

While Hermann Cohen’s transcendental method consists in starting from the “fact of science” in order to identify its conditions of possibility, Martial Gueroult adopts this method in order to highlight the conditions of possibility not of science, but of the plurality of systems in the history of philosophy. The challenge for the French philosopher is not only to guarantee the history of philosophy a properly philosophical status, by making seemingly contradictory systems coexist, but also and above all to guarantee philosophy's autonomy vis-à-vis the sciences. However, this paper will try to show that Cohen’s approach seems, in many respects, more apt to guarantee these two objectives.
