En guise d'hommage à Zeev Sternhell récemment disparu, cet article dégage la cohérence de son œuvre d'historien générée par sa volonté de comprendre par quels cheminements idéologiques de type révolutionnaire la civilisation européenne, nourrie par les Lumières, a basculé dans la première moitié du XXe siècle dans la barbarie. L'article propose également de discerner la place que Sternhell a conférée à l'antisémitisme dans cette descente aux Enfers. Il se termine par une tentative d'expliquer quelles furent ses motivations pour écrire sur le sionisme socialiste dans la période antérieure à la création de l'État d'Israël, un livre qui fait exception dans son œuvre entièrement vouée à l’étude des origines et l'évolution du fascisme en France sous la Troisième République.

As a tribute to the recently deceased Zeev Sternhell of blessed memory, this article brings out the coherence of his work as an historian. Z. Sternhell wanted to understand by which revolutionary ideological paths the European civilization nourished by the Enlightenment rocked in the first half of the twentieth century into barbarism. This article also intends to discern the place that Z. Sternhell gave to Antisemitism during this descent into Hell. It will end with an attempt to explain the motivations of the Israeli historian to write about socialist Zionism in the period before the establishment of the State of Israel in a book which was an exception in his entire work devoted to studying the origins and evolution of fascism in France under the Third Republic.
