The establishment of a Florentine Duchy by Alessandro de’ Medici brought far-reaching changes to the political, social, and religious fabric in Tuscany. The first perceptible changes regarded political loyalties, as the supporters of the Republic were forced to leave the city, thus labeled fuoriusciti. Their reintegration by Duke Cosimo I only partly emended the fundamental distinction between the regime opponents and the Medici supporters. Michelangelo embodies many of these radical changes...
