On the 1st of September 1923, the earth shook in Japan. Moored in Yokohama, the French liner André Lebon witnessed and played a part in a disaster that had a profound effect on contemporary Japan. The archives of French Lines & Compagnies also provide an opportunity to examine the health, humanitarian and diplomatic roles played by these liners during a crisis.
