On English Plymouth harbour, there’s a gateway, The sky is framed within an invisible door Seagulls flitter through it and away, The way the Pilgrim Fathers walked through it before. A few yards away, the list of passengers reads On the stone walls of the medieval neighbourhood, And sounds like an obituary among widows’weeds, Doffed and scattered everywhere until they took roots. Through the arched and framed doorway The Pilgrims could gaze at the waves, Wondering what future lay ahead...
