Rouen's status not just as a seafaring port but also as a city in which merchants haggled and struck commercial agreements is a recurrent feature of many of the documents we have analysed. But maritime trade was not without risks. We have already seen the frustration of a merchant who watched on helplessly as his ship sunk with most of its cargo whilst 'helpers' pilfered some of its contents... If it was so easy to steal right in front of the owners, what chance was there of recouping goods ...
